Friday Essay: On BAT's Age and Name - and Impending Presidency - By Bolaji Aluko

Image credit: AFP A lot has been made in recent times leading to and since the emergence of Bola Ahmed Tinubu (BAT), of rumors surrounding his name and age.  Let me say from the very beginning, in case you don't need to read me any further:  all of it is too much muckraking bad-belle, in pidgin vernacular, balderdash in cockney.  Moving on.... I  have known BAT since 1993.  A viral picture is currently circulating with some of us Yoruba PDM June 12 "rascals" in the Washington DC area prominently featured, with BAT humbly in it. I will be 68 years old  in two days time - and I know that BAT is older than myself!  But  when I  knew him, like a good Omoluabi that he was and is,  he deferred then to many people who were older than himself, and who were no where more than 10 years older than myself.    That is why all this nonsense about his age being 80, 87 is just that: plain nonsense.  He claims to be 71, and I agree with him, but at the most, he cannot b

T he Nigeria Union of Journalists , Ekiti State Council has called on the Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji to break the jinx of appointing a non-media professional as the Commissioner for Information in the State by appointing a core journalist as the Chief information officer of his government. This was contained in the communique issued at the end of the Congress of the union held on March 28, 2023 signed by the secretary of the Union, Mr Kayode Babatuyi.  The Communique which also congratulated the new General Manager of Progress FM in Ekiti State, Dr Bola Agbaje, thanked the Governor for renovating the Correspondent Chapel of the union. According to the Congress, having a core journalist as Information Commissioner would foster a more cordial relationship between the union and the government. The factional Leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, Chief Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, OFR, has dissociated the organization from the Communique issued after a meeting that held on Tuesday, March 27, at the country home of Pa Ayo Adebanjo in Isanya Ogbo, Ogun State because of the content of the said document.   The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), at an emergency meeting today, Tuesday, March 28, 2023 has appointed Amb. Umar Ililya Damagum as the new Acting National Chairman in compliance with the Order of the Benue State High Court yesterday. This was contained in a release signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Hon. Debo Ologunagba According to him, "after a careful consideration of the Court Order and in line with Section 45 (2) of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017), the NWC resolved that the Deputy National Chairman (North) His Excellency, Amb. Umar Ililya Damagum assumes the National Chairmanship of our Party in acting capacity with effect from today, Tuesday, March 28, 2023. Ekiti civil servants have now heaved a sigh of relief as Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji has approved the payment of the 2019 promotion arreas for both the State and Local Government workers. The Ekiti State Head of Service, Barrister Dele  Agbede gave this information in his office in Ado Ekiti. Agbede stated that Mr Governor has through this approval demonstrated his commitment to his electioneering promises and the development of public service.   The Governor of Ekiti State, Abiodun Oyebanji in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Yinka Oyebode, has said the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu enjoyed immense grace of God in his lifetime.  The Governor said this in a congratulatory message to the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his 71st birthday.
