About Us
Fountain Newsbreaker is a core community Newsbreaker which was established in 2011 to break the jinx of government monopoly of media ownership in Ekiti. Its maiden edition hit the news-stand on March 28 through April 4 as a weekly newspaper initially with the name THE NEWSBREAKER while its mantra reads; “.. Some tell the News, Some watch it; we BREAK it!
From its name and the mantra, the mission was clear from the onset while the vision was radiant – to break the news which some are watching and some are trying to tell. On getting to the National Library to register the name having fulfilled the condition of having the first publication, we were told that a foreign paper already existed bearing the name; THE NEWSBREAKER, somewhere in another continent.
Hence we have to add the prefix FOUNTAIN to it since we did not want to do away with the name NEWSBREAKER. This was how we came about FOUNTAIN NEWSBREAKER which was approved for us at the National Library with the ISSN 2250-9275 which qualified us to publish as a registered newspaper in Nigeria.
Our First Anniversary Lecture was delivered by Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s Commissioner for Information in the State of Osun, Chief Sunday Akere on April 20, 2012 on the topic; “Roles of Community Newspaper in Making Government Accountable to the Grassroot”. The paper was published till 2012 when economic recess affected its production but was revived in 2015.
In 2016 Fountain Newsbreaker holds its second Annual Lecture which was delivered by Mr Moses Jolayemi, former Managing Director/Editor in Chief of Daily Newswatch newspaper.
The topic; “The Roles of Government and the Public in Making Community Journalism Viable in Nigeria”.
The lecture took place under the Chairmanship of the former Governor of Ekiti State, Engr Segun Oni.
Prior to the Fountain Newsbreaker’s herald into the news market in Ekiti, some local community news magazines had come and gone into the oblivion while there were some papers existing such as Forum newspaper owned by Mr Kole Ajayi, Kayegbo International owned by Chief Morakinyo Ogunniyi, The Benchmark owned by Taiwo Oladipo & Co, The Pen owned by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Ekiti State Council and of course the Ekiti Voice and later Western Voice by of Ekiti State Government.
Of all the aforementioned newspapers, only one or two were bold enough to publish political stories until the Fountain Newsbreaker hit the newsstand focusing majorly on politics and thought provoking issues which had hitherto been considered by the then existing papers as no-go-areas for fear of patronage, harassment or government clamp down.
We entered into an agreement with the Newspapers’ Vendors’ Association of Nigeria, Ekiti State chapter and the paper is now circulating round the sixteen Local Government Areas.
It must however be mentioned that the newspaper went into recess in 2013 two years after production simply because of the poor reading culture in Ekiti coupled with the lack of patronage by the government of Governor Kayode Fayemi in the State whereas the PDP allegedly considered the paper as ACN-paper because its Publisher, Akogun Tai Oguntayo later got appointed as Special Assistant to the Governor. This really affected the newspaper just as it did to many national newspapers owned by politicians in the past such as the National Concord owned by the late MKO Abiola and the Nigerian Tribune owned by the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Therefore, this paper was rested but the office did not fold up.
After two years of recess, Fountain Newsbreaker bounced back in 2015 with a renewed vigour though this time around though with very meager resources. As at today, the paper is comes out monthly unlike weekly paper with which we started in 2011 but we hope to resume bi-monthly production any moment from now.
Fountain Newsbreaker is published by Cotai Communications Network, a publishing outfit which had been existence since 1995. Cotai Communications Network is into book publishing, Advertisement Agency, Media and Public Affairs consultancy. It went into community Newspaper in 1995 with the publication of Okemesi Newsletter which TheGuide Newspaper in 1997 which was published shortly and rested in 2002.
Newspaper production unit of Cotai Communications Network was suspended between 2002 and 2010 during which this company specialized majorly in book publishing and advertising. The list of books published by Cotai Communications Network are; Civilian Revolt (1993), Fabunmi Ekitiparapo (1995), Voice of Progress (1997), Newswriting and Reporting (2008), Investigative Journalism without Tears (2008) and The Palace Boy (2009).
