Fapohunda, Fayemi's Attorney-General shortlisted to be SAN





The Honourable Attorney-General & Commissioner for Justice, Ekiti State, Olawale Fapohunda and 129 other lawyers have been shortlisted by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) for the award of the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).


The names of the shortlisted candidates were contained in a public notice for advertisment in the newspapers released by the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee recently. 


According to the Acting Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria and Secretary of the LPPC, Mrs Hajo Bello, the shortlisted candidates emerged from both the advocate filtration stages and academic pre-qualification exercise, “preparatory to the award of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria for the year 2021”.


Fapohunda, a two-term Attorney General of Ekiti State is renowned for his contribution to the administration of justice in Ekiti State and Nigeria. 


Some of the progressive laws credited to him include; Administration of Criminal Justice Act  2015, Administration of Criminal Justice Law, Ekiti State 2014, Administration of Civil Justice Law, Ekiti State, 2019.


Others are the Anti-Torture Act 2017, the Child Rights Act 2003, the Compulsory Treatment and Care of Child Victims of Sexual Violence Law 2020, the Correctional Services Act 2020, Legal Aid Council of Nigeria (amendment) Act 2004, the National Human Rights Commission (amendment) Act 2010 and the Victims of Crime Law, Ekiti State 2021. 


Since his tenure as Attorney General in Ekiti, Fapohunda has established the Ministry of Justice Academy (First in Nigeria), he also opened a Register of Sex Offenders in Ekiti State (Also, First in Nigeria).


Fapohunda is a member 

Governing Council, Legal Aid Council of Nigeria; Member, Presidential Committee on Prison Decongestion; Vice-Chair, Federal Government Committee on the Prevention of Torture; Member, Presidential Committee on Administration of Justice Reform; Member, Presidential Committee on the Review of Death Penalty; Chair, Nigeria Military Human Rights Dialogue during which he facilitated the establishment of human rights desks in army formations nationwide. 


He was a member, Nigerian Army Special Board of Inquiry on Human Rights Violations and a member of the Presidential Panel on the Review of Compliance of the Nigerian Armed Forces with Human Rights obligations  and Rules of Engagement.

 

Fapohunda is a Two-term Commissioner with the National Human Rights Commission; Member, Steering Committee, National Action Plan for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights (NAP) in Nigeria; Lead Adviser, Access to Justice Programme, Department for International Development UK; Lead Adviser/ Consultant, European Union Administration of Justice Project.


Out of the 130 shortlisted for the year 2021, 95 are of the Advocate category, while the remaining 35 are of the academic category.
