ORIMABUYAKU NIFEMI.
The 14th day of November 2020 was a red lettered day in the field of journalism especially to the women in this field, as they made another deliberate and intentional choice in the running of the affairs of Nigeria Association Of Women Journalist (NAWOJ) for the next three years as this marked the 10th NAWOJ Triennial Delegates Conference
This year Electioneering process had it's residence at Minna which is the capital of Niger state and it's a city in the middle belt of Nigeria which is also the power state of the federation and our chief host was Mrs Mary Noel-Berje ( NAWOJ chairperson Niger state and chief press to the governor)
At the venue were present different female delegates from the 36 states of the federation including the Federal Capital Territory and the 6 Geo political zones of the federation. It could be referred to as a confluence gathering because the rendezvous had an influx of women from different tribes, different languages and all walks of life.
Fast forward to the 14th of November which was the main day and the main event. The year's Electioneering process might not really be a simple task unlike the former ones because the position of the president this year is been tussled between four reputable women of timbre and Calibre.
Amongst them are Mrs Ladi Bala who hails from Adamawa State in the North eastern region and the present national secretary of the association, also Mrs Aisha Ibrahim from Borno State within the North eastern region, Ruth Absalom Abubakar from Gombe State within the same region also and Mrs Lucy Chindaba, also a one time national scribe of the association who served in that capacity for two terms back-to-back. Mrs Chindaba from Plateau State in the Middle Belt region is contesting against three others all from the North eastern region. The above profile makes this year's election quite a unique and different one as it is recorded in the history of NAWOJ for the past thirty years and plus there has never been four conteststant vying for the post of the NAWOJ President.
The election was conducted on the eve of November 14th at the International Conference Center, Minna.
The result of the electoral process was announced by the chairman of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalist Electoral Committee (NAWOJECO), the person of Mr Ezeogo Boniface Okoro, returning officer.
The position of the National treasurer was won by Fatima Rasheed
The position of the National Secretary which was been tussled between Ameh and Helen Udofa, Ameh pulled a total of 266 votes while Helen Udofa pulled 536 votes making Helen Udofa the new National Secretary of NAWOJ.
The position of the National Deputy that's between two contestants which are Idoko Jumbo and Okonkwo Lilian, Idoko Jumbo got 377 votes and Okonkwo Lilian got 434 votes, making Okonkwo Lilian the national deputy of NAWOJ
The position of the National President was among four sisters, Ladi Bala, Aisha Ibrahim, Chindaba Lucy and Abubakar Ruth with Abubakar Ruth having 48votes, Chindaba Lucy 85votes, Aisha Ibrahim 251votes and Ladi Bala 439votes. Making Ladi Bala, the former national secretary, and a one time chairperson of Adamawa state chapter NAWOJ, the new National President of NAWOJ for the next three years.
Minna2020, is such an amazing one such that it has brought to our consciousness that the woman is no longer in the back seat in the society rather at the forefront and with every light of the day, the female gender makes a room for herself at the top and calves a niche for her empowerment in the society.
