Human Trafficking: Fapohunda Assures Ekiti People of MOJ's Commitment To Tackling Menace

Ekiti State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Olawale Fapohunda has assured the People of Ekiti State of the State Government commitment to tackling human trafficking which he noted  as an emerging scourge and major concern to the State.


He made the assurance at the 2019 Annual Law Week of the Federation of International Women Lawyers (FIDA), Ekiti State Chapter, held at the Afe Babalola Bar Center, High Court Complex in Ado-Ekiti to kick start the FIDA Week 2019.


The Attorney-General while giving his speech on the topic - Human Trafficking: A Menace To The Social Economic Development of Our Society described human trafficking as a call for reflection.


Fapohunda in his statement stressed that combating Human Trafficking is one of the prioritised issues by the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry has taken a three pronged approach to fight it namely: the Law, Judicial institutions and strategic Partnership with relevant government and non-government organisations. 


He also mentioned the ongoing review of the Laws of Ekiti State which includes revisiting key provisions of the Ekiti State Criminal Code Law as it is the desire of the Fayemi Administration to enact Laws that respond to emerging crimes in the State including human trafficking.


The Wife of the Governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi who was the Keynote Speaker at the event, in her remarks spoke of the need for all hands to be on deck to combat the human trafficking menace in the society. 


While also enumerating few of the achievements of the State in various areas, the Erelu Bisi Fayemi noted that Ekiti State is the first State in the Country to open a Sex Offenders Register which was an initiative of the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Olawale Fapohunda in his first term in Office.


The FIDA week is a week long program which is to span from 17th -23rd of June 2019 with the theme, Human Trafficking: A Menace To Socio-Economic Development of the Society and was declared open by the Chief Judge of the State, Justice A.S Daramola.


The opening ceremony was graced by the Wife of the State Governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for  Justice, Olawale Fapohunda, Commissioner for Women Affairs, Moji Fafure, former Attorney General, Obafemi Adewale, and many other big wigs in the legal profession from within and outside the State.


FIDA is a non-governmental, non-profit Organisation made up of female Lawyers and is saddled with the responsibility of protecting, promoting and preserving the rights and interests of Women and Children.

ANA Faction Loses Court Case, Risks Being Docked For Contempt of Court

The National Executive of a faction of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) led by Mr. Camilus Ukah has lost its bid to challenge the jurisdiction of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja, in a pending originating summons against them and the faction it constituted for Abuja, under the Chairmanship of Mrs. Usman Halima.
