Sanwo-Olu and The Power of Religious Influence - By Ade Olufadeju

Image
As reported in most today's dailies, Lagos governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has charged clerics to hype the Lagos traffic rules to members of the public. This is what I call 'native intelligence' in governance. Gerhard Lenski on page 331 of his book *The Religious Factor, a Sociologist’s Inquiry* , defines religion as “a system of beliefs about the nature of force(s), ultimately shaping man’s destiny, and the practices associated therewith, shared by members of a group.” Although some have argued that religious influence should remain out of laws and out of politics in general, the basic truth is that when religion is not influential in a society or has ceased to be, the state inherits the entire burden of public morality, crime and intolerance. It then must use punishment and police. Yet this is unsuccessful as morality, integrity and self-respect not already inherent in the individual, cannot be enforced with any great success. Only by a spiritual awareness and incu

Fayemi Advocates Law Against Neglect of Projects Initiated By Past Administrations

Image
Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has canvassed the enactment of a transition law to prevent succeeding governments from abandoning projects initiated by past administrations. The Governor said the law was needed to check the wanton abandonment of projects simply because they were not initiated by the incumbent. Specifically, Governor Fayemi stated that most of the projects he initiated during his first term which impacted positively on the lives of the people were jettisoned by his successor. He said the law will serve as a guide for any government and stipulate lines of demarcation between what constitutes infractions by way of abandonment of projects and actions that would be of tremendous benefit to the people. The Governor stated this in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday, while receiving officials of the Security Exchange Commission (SEC) who were in the state to inspect projects that were financed from the N25 billion bond taken by the state government during his first term.

Talk of consistency, you talk of the Rt Hon Fuminiyi Afuye Talk of honesty & loyalty, you refer to the Speaker of Ekiti House of Assembly Little surprise this Ikere Ekiti born Constitutional lawyer has had a steady rise to power since over decade ago. In the 3rd Assembly aka 13-13, he was the Leader of Business (2007-2011) Under Dr Kayode Fayemi's first tenure as Governor, he was the Commissioner for Information, Youths & Sports In this new dispensation, he was reelected into the House by Ikere Consistency 1 to represent them again. Among his peers, Afuye was again unanimously elected to be the Rt Hon Speaker of the 6th Assembly.  What distinguish Afuye among his predecessors are: his experience in lawmaking, profundity in law and his leadership candour. He directs the affairs of the house with maturity and occasional jocular interjections to diffuse tensions....   Office of  the Special Adviser, Media to the Speaker of Ekiti State State House of Assemb

Tai Oguntayo :Journey of a Rugged Pen-Pusher By Gani Salau

Akogun Tai Oguntayo Akogun, as fondly called, is a household name in Ekiti state and beyond mostly in the journalism family. Taking a look at this pen giant; both closely and at a distance, one thing that is sacrosanct is that he calls a spade a spade and not an hand ass. This has earned him many accolades. Born 50/years ago in Okemesi Ekiti, Tai could be described as a gift not to Okemesi and Ekiti alone but Nigeria as a whole. To him, journalism is inbuilt considering his sojourn in life. Tai cut his teeth in journalism in his campus days at the Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti in the late 1980s and later The Polytechnic, Ibadan where he served as the versatile Editor-in-Chief of The Press Club and PRO of the Press Council. He later told us in class, his journalism students, of how his Press Board was smashed severally by notorious students at The Polytechnic, Ibadan because of his unrepentant war against cultism and other vices on the campus. In his quest for professional

The Law is No Longer an Ass in Ekiti - By Akin Rotimi

Image
“The Law is an ass” is a commonly used expression to convey the frustrations individuals have with accessing justice. The metaphor of the stubbornness of the ass (donkey) refers to the very rigid application of the law. It has its origins in the works of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist (1838), when the character Mr. Bumble - the aggrieved husband of an overbearing woman, is told in court that "...the law supposes that your wife acts under your direction", to which he replies: "If the law supposes that; …the law is an ass". Everyone knows someone that has tried to access justice through litigation, and can understand why legal practitioners are generally agreed that disputes are not always best resolved in court, especially in developing countries like Nigeria. This is why governments all over the world continue to advance several ways to reform their justice sectors in keeping with the times, and to be amenable to the peculiarities of their peoples and cultur

The Price Of Change - By Gbadebo Adeagbo

Image
The word Change may seems to be an enormous word especially in political vocabulary whenever its uttered by politicians who have adequately studied the dynamics of power and its operational framework together with its effect on the masses.  Getting familiar with this sonorous sloganeering barely came four years ago. It was believed to have connoted a slogan that would send packing the then ruling party into exile for having failed Nigerians at large. "Change" was indeed the right word to confront conspicuous act of corruption and gross mismanagement of public funds existing in the then ruling party which gives everyone a pseudo-legal rights to cart away our common wealth. The word unequivocally crackdown the hubris tendencies that characterized the then ruling party for having being captured in many occasion that, their political gathering would rule Nigeria perpetually. Change is a global word. It is a word that made the Chinese reformer, Deen Hsiao Ping to be d
