Teachers Must Inspire Learners

The Dean of Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan, Prof. Femi Fakolade has emphasized on the impact of teachers personality on the learners' development during an induction programme organized by the Teacher’s Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) at the Large Lecture Theatre (LLT), Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan on 25th May,2023.
During his speech, He said teachers must have a personality that is sincerely welcome by all learners into the life - long journey of learning.
Prof. Fakolade further listed the professional skills that a teacher must possess to include: skills in communication, listening, collaboration, adaptability, empathy, and patience.
Other skills according to him include value in real-world learning, the exchange of best practices, and continuous learning.
He informed the inductees of their needs in the society, saying the World needs almost 69 million teachers to reach the 2030 education goal of UNESCO.
“Information on the statistics of teachers worldwide includes that there are close to 85 million teachers worldwide; 94 million in pre-primary, 30.3 million in primary, 18.1 million in Lower Secondary, 14.0 million in Upper secondary, and 12.5 million in tertiary education. But the world is still in need of almost 69 million new teachers to reach the 2030 education goals (UNESCO, Institute of Statistics),” he said.
He encouraged the new teachers to aspire to inspire before they expired.
He concluded with the words of William Authur Ward who states; “The mediocre teacher tells, the good teacher explains, the superior teacher demonstrates, the great teacher inspires.”
