Today in History: How Bloody Coup led to the end of 1st Republic
ON THIS DAY IN 1966, YOUNG ARMY OFFICERS IN THE VERY EARLY HOURS OF THAT DAY IN FOUR MAJOR REGIONAL CITIES ACROSS NIGERIA SIMULTANEOUSLY STAGED A BLOODY MILITARY REBELLION EFFECTIVELY PUTTING AN END TO NIGERIA'S FIRST REPUBLIC.
The revolution led to the killings of several high-ranking Political and Military figures across the Country.
The head of the army, Maj. Gen. Johnson Aguiyi Ironsi foiled the plot and later took over the reigns of government the same day.

The names of the original ring leaders started filtering in within military circles same day and it was later revealed that Majors, Emmanuel Ifeajuna, Chukwuma Nzeogwu, Christian Anuforo, Adewale Ademoyega and Donatus Okafor were the ring leaders.
Others who were co-conspirators were Majors, Chudi Sokei, Humphrey Chukwuka, Timothy Onwuantuegwu, John Obienu and Captains, Ogbonaya Orji, Ben Gbulie, Emmanuel Nwobosi and Godwin Ude..

The Coup which was the first in Nigeria’s history ultimately changed Nigeria’s political landscape forever, triggering the May riots (araba) of 1966, a revenge coup by northern Officers in July of the same year, and the outbreak of the Nigeria Civil war.
