Fapohunda Laments over Rate of Rape Incidents in Ekiti

Ekiti State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Olawale Fapohunda has expressed concern over the increasing incidents of women battering, rape and child defilement in the state.
Fapohunda who made this observation during a meeting with top law officers in the Ministry said, the Ministry of Justice must review its prosecution strategy in dealing with this scourge. He said the Zero  Tolerance  Policy of the Fayemi administration  for all forms of violence against women and children must be implemented to the letter.

Fapohunda said sex  offenders should know that the Ministry of Justice will seek the maximum punishment provided under the Law.

He said in addition to vigorously prosecuting sex offenders, the Ministry should take additional measures that includes naming and shaming persons convicted of such abuses. He said there is a need to begin to publisize names of persons in the Ministry's Sex Offenders Register.
Fapohunda said effective immediately, an advisory will be sent to the offenders communities and their  traditional rulers. He said communities must be protected from these persons.

 Fapohunda said there is a need for key institutions in government and civil society to put together a public education campaign aimed at further enlightening the citizenry.. As a first he said  the Ministry will convene  a high level meeting of concerned persons and institutions to agree on practical steps in this regard.

A candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ibrahim Olanrewaju, an aspirant for the House of Representatives who was present at the meeting  said that these acts was largely  borne out of poverty and the lust for quick money. He said in many cases acts of defilement were related to ritual purposes

"Even when people were penalized, some getting jail term, life in prison and the likes, yet, the act is increasing on daily basis, I think there should be more enlightenment on the issue”, he said.
Also present at the meeting were, the permanent secretary and solicitor general of the ministry, Lawrence Ojo, the Special Assistant to the Attorney-General on Public Education, Media and Communication, Tunde Olaolorun, the newly appointed  chairman, Governing Board,  Ministry of Justice Academy, Dr Babatunde, the former Attorney General of the State, Owoseni Ajayi,  the Chairman Ado Ekiti Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, Samuel Falade.

ANA Faction Loses Court Case, Risks Being Docked For Contempt of Court

The National Executive of a faction of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) led by Mr. Camilus Ukah has lost its bid to challenge the jurisdiction of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja, in a pending originating summons against them and the faction it constituted for Abuja, under the Chairmanship of Mrs. Usman Halima.
