Breaking: Tribunal Strikes Out Eleka's Cases Against Fayemi
Election Tribunal sitting in Abuja has unanimously
struck out the case of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship
candidate in Ekiti state, Olusola Kolapo and upheld Kayode Fayemi of the APC as
a duly elected governor of the state, The Punch reports.
Judgements coming in to us showed that various cases against the governor Kayode Fayemi were struck out. Detail of the
tribunal's ruling is still scanty as at the time of filing this report. It may,
however be recalled that Rufus Adunmo, the deputy director general of the
campaign organisation of Governor Fayem, on Monday, November 26, 2018, told the
tribunal that the July 14, 2018 governorship poll was the best the Independent
National Electoral Commission (INEC) ever conducted.
As the 60th defence witness in the case, Adunmo
insisted that the election was free, fair and credible by all standards,
despite claims of bias, violence, vote-buying and other forms of malpractices
that occasioned the election. Fayemi was also present at the proceedings which
was led in evidence by his lawyer, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN). Adunmo said before the
tribunal chaired by Justice Suleiman Belgore that officials of the Independent
National Electoral Commission were not biased against any party as alleged.
Fayemi had on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 filed a
2,225-page defence to counter the petition of the defeated candidate of the PDP
and former deputy governor of the state, Prof. Kolapo Olusola-Eleka. A
statement made available to Legit.ng explained that eight Senior Advocates of
Nigeria led the legal team of the governor. Fayemi, in the defence, with over
3,000 documents as exhibits, averred that he actually won the gubernatorial
election of July 14, contrary to claims by Eleka and urged the tribunal to
dismiss the petition for lacking in merit.
