Ekiti 2018: YIAGA Condemns the use of Hate Speeches and Inciting Statements

An observer group, YIAGA Africa, in its project, Watching The Votes (WTV)  has condemned the increasing level of hate speech and inciting statements by Key political actors in Ekiti State and urged the security agencies to sanction any individual or group propagating hate speech in this election.

They made this condemnation while briefing journalists today July 12, 2018 at the Eleventh house, Ado-Ekiti, on their pre-election findings on the 2018  Ekiti Gubernatorial election.

The executive Director, YIAGA Africa, Samson Itodo while presenting the Watching The Vote (WTV) project and deployment plans for the July 14 gubernatorial elections, said 500 stationary observers would be deployed to a representative statistical sample of 250 polling units and 25 mobile observers would be located in all the 16 local governments areas of the State. He said this deployment would enable them to provide timely and accurate information on the conduct of accreditation, voting and counting as well as to independently verify the official results of the election as announced by INEC.

He also expressed their concerns with the overzealous and hostile conduct of security personnel deployed to the state for the election. He thereby called on security agencies to uphold the principal of non-partisanship, transparency, civil policing and professionalism in the conduct of their affairs.

A member of Watching The Vote (WTV)  group, Mr Ezenwa Nwagu also expressed their concerns at increasing reports of voters inducement, as both witnessed and heard by citizen observers. He then noted that rumours of voters inducement could undermine citizens' confidence in the integrity of elections.

YIAGA Africa, throughout the election day, would provide updates on the conduct of the election based on the near real-time reports from its observers. These would be released at the data centre and posted on social media at the group's Facebook Page (www.facebook.com/yiaga.org) and their Twitter page (@YIAGA). YIAGA would hold its own press conference and issue its election results verification statement immediately after INEC announces the official results for the gubernatorial election.

ANA Faction Loses Court Case, Risks Being Docked For Contempt of Court

The National Executive of a faction of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) led by Mr. Camilus Ukah has lost its bid to challenge the jurisdiction of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja, in a pending originating summons against them and the faction it constituted for Abuja, under the Chairmanship of Mrs. Usman Halima.
