He made this declaration while delivering his inaugural lecture titled: "Demystification of Mathematics: Glimpses From The Lens of a Mathematics Educator", which took place at Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan. He further explained that Mathematics uses quantitative symbols to express universal truth and has been a driving force for virtually all culture.  Speaking from a spiritual angle, Prof. Akinsola revealed that Mathematics was used to design and build Noah's Ark, adding that, God ordered Noah to prepare an Ark and gave him the mathematical dimension to use.  He said this can be found in Genesis 6:15: "And this is the fasion which thou shall make it of: The length of the Ark shall be 300 cubits, t...

TRAVELOGUE: A MEMORY OF ACHEBE’S BROWN UNIVERSITY

Image
By Wale Okediran It was raining in Boston when Lufthansa flight 422 from Abuja via Frankfurt landed at the Logan International Airport, Boston Massachusetts that cold and overcast May afternoon. Immigration and Customs formalities over, I had to wait a while for my friend and travelling colleague, Ikeogu Oke to complete his own formalities. Ikeogu, a performing poet had travelled to the US with his instrumentalist Michael Ngozi Osuji and a ton of Igbo musical instruments all the way from Abuja. The duo therefore had to wait a while for the meticulous and ever suspicious US customs officials to inspect every inch of the instruments made up of local gongs, drums and xylophones such as Udu, Ikoro, Ogele, Igba, Oja and Ekwe. ‘They even scratched the surface of the ‘Igba’ to ascertain that it was actually a drum’ Ikeogu later remarked as he showed me the scratch marks on the skin surface of the big drum minutes after the inspection. It was in this light hearted mood that we breezed into Pr...

KOLE OMOTOSO; TRIBUTE TO A MENTOR AND SEER BY WALE OKEDIRAN

Image
More than 40 years have passed since I met Professor Bankole Omotoso, distinguished short story writer, novelist, dramatist, critic, actor, biographer, founding General Secretary and a former President of the Association of Nigerian Authors who sadly passed away on July 19 2023 at the age of 80 years.  Throughout those years, I had the honor of attending several local and international literary events with this brilliant, kind and thoughtful man who went on to become a mentor as well as a great and loving friend. When I first met Kole Omotoso in the early 1980’s, I was a young medical doctor/writer in the grips of some unforeseen forces which were intent on tearing me away from a relatively stable medical profession into the uncertain terrain of writing.  Even though I was enjoying my private medical practice, I found myself drawn more and more into the circle of writers, artists and left wing ‘kaftan and jeans wearing’ radicals rather than my ‘shirt and tie’ medical colleague...

Stakeholders frown over increase in fees of Unity schools

Image
By: Adeboye Ado, Akure Fountain Newsbreaker Following the recent increase in the fees of Federal Government Colleges otherwise known as Unity Schools, stakeholders have berated upward review of the school fees. The Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Education had increased the school fees of new students into Federal Colleges to ₦100,000.  “The latest fees/charge increment will affect virtually all aspects and activities of the school, including tuition and boarding fees, uniform, text books, deposit, exercise books, prospectus, caution fee, ID card, stationery, clubs and societies, sports, extra lesson, insurance, et al”, the government said in a statement yesterday. Speaking with PromptNews correspondent on Saturday, a retired Principal, Femi Afolabi, described the increment as an effort to outrightly make education unaffordable for the middle class in the country. Afolabi who argued that that if the government was sincere with its firm stance to reducing the leve...
